Book Overview

"A compelling and relevant must-read." -Entertainment Weekly

In this riveting popular history, the creator of You Must Remember This probes the inner workings of Hollywood's glamorous golden age through the stories of some of the dozens of actresses pursued by Howard Hughes, to reveal how the millionaire mogul's obsessions with sex, power and publicity trapped, abused, or benefitted women who dreamt of screen stardom.

Lots of surprises in this book!

I must admit the beginning was a little slow for me as I wasn't familiar with the silent era of film stars. When they got to Jean Harlow, things picked up quite a bit. Lots of things that I didn't know about Harlow. I think the author dwelled on Jane Russell, especially the author's concentration and Howard's fixation on her two assets. Devoted over 75 pages to her, then kept bringing them up throughout the book. I love Jane Russell, but this was a bit over the top. It was a little confusing at times as Hughes apparently proposed marriage to just about anyone he wanted to go to bed with. Tough to remember if married them or not. I don't think even he knew at times! I didn't know he had a connection to Ida Lupino. Her entre to US citizenship was brilliant. I admire her for what she did. I enjoyed her part of this book that I just recently purchased books dedicated to Lupino and another one for Terry Moore. She was quite a character, too. Reading about Jane Russell inspired me to order a book on her as well. Not often that a book does that for me, to get the story from a different point of view. All in all, a fascinating read!
