THE SCENT KEEPER by Erica Bauermeister Emmeline has grown up on a remote island off the coast of British Columbia with her eccentric father John. They live in a cabin with a floor to ceiling wall of tiny drawers. Each drawer houses a small glass bottle containing scent-papers sealed with colored wax. The scent papers are infused with different smells that conjure a particular time, moment, event or place. Their lives are built around living off the land and gaining knowledge about their surroundings through their sense of smell. This story reminded me of Where the Crawdads Sing (without the whole murder aspect). Once Emmaline (rhymes with vine) leaves the confines of her island, she has to grow up quickly and learn how to live and function in the 21st century. Her experiences at school and Fisher’s home life were really especially heartbreaking. I loved her friendship with Fisher, her love for Dodge, and the way Henry and Colette gave her the time, space and support to find her way. As we know, certain scents have the ability to transport us to another place and time or remind us of someone we once knew and loved. It’s an important part of our memories. This book will make you appreciate your sense of smell and if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to add on to your fragrance collection. I read this pretty quickly and even with the vague/open ending I enjoyed it. Overall, a lovely, well written lyrical story to get lost in. Rating: 4/5 ⭐️

Scientific and mystical, what's not to love

I loved this book even though some will say it is a lot like another award winning book. There are many similarities but is still a great red. The characters are fully developed and you feel their emotions. Parts were predictable but still enjoyable and the visual descriptions by the author are amazing. A quick and enjoyable read without lumbering dialog.
