The Road Is Wider Than Long: An Image Diary from the Balkans July-August 1938; Series of Surrealist Poetry; London Gallery Editions

During July and August 1938, as Europe prepared for war, Roland Penrose and Lee Miller journeyed through the Balkans. Penrose was a painter and a writer; Miller was a studio assistant to Man Ray, a muse to several artists, and a photographer. As they travelled, Penrose snapped pictures and took notes of a world that both artists were just discovering and that would soon largely be destroyed and transformed forever.

A unique Surrealist travel memoir

Here's an evocative artist's handmade book by an English champion of the Surrealists, and a notable Surrealist himself. In this memoir of a journey through the Balkans in late 1938, created for his wife, the author combines text using varied typefaces, black & white photographs, and his own drawings. In just a few poetic lines, he conveys a wealth of emotions & images in a way that lengthy paragraphs could never hope to capture -- the feeling is that of a sharply remembered dream, steeped in centuries of myth. Well worth reading & mulling over, and not just for devotees of the Surrealists. Recommended!
