The Hobo Philosopher

I've used this volume of Page Smith's great series "A People History" so much that the pages are falling out and the binding is falling apart. It is a good one. Mr. Smith calls his 8 volume set a People's History not exactly in the same manner or intent as Howard Zinn. Compared to Mr. Page, Mr. Zinn version of A People's History is a rather brief outline. Because of my reading in Page Smith's volumes, there was nothing in Mr. Zinn book that I wasn't already intimately familiar with. The Rise of Industrial America is filled with famous people who I had never heard of - which is no longer a surprise to me. There are so many very, very important people now and in the past that most of us never know or hear about - but that makes them no less important. This is volume six of the series. It begins with the Indian wars, takes us through the Railroad czars , robber baron, and the rise of labor unions and the wars between capital and the workers. If you are interested in the industrial revolution in America and all of its related problems this book is well worth buying alone. I have the entire set which I find indispensable. "A Summer with Charlie" "A Little Something: Poetry and Prose" "Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother" "The Eastpointer" Selections from award winning column.
