Book Overview

Max August was a point man when he served during the Vietnam War, the guy who had to lead his patrol through dangers he couldn't possibly anticipate. Now he's a disc jockey, at one with the music and his faithful audience . . . until the day when he is swept into a battle invisible to all but the participants.

For nearly five centuries, Cornelius Agrippa has fought against an evil that has threatened to corrupt and destroy everything good...

Great first book!

I found The Point Man after seeing The Long Man in the bookstore. What a great story! It's a bit dated, but it works just great for Max's exploits. I enjoyed The Long Man even more, but you have to start here as the Point Man... 30 years ago. Where it all started with Max and Magick. I look forward to more of Max August!! The downside is I have to wait another year for any more new Max...

A Comic Pro's Prose

Steve Englehart's action story zips and crackles along, throwing off sparks. It recalls his Coyote comic book of the '80s, which retained the coolest aspects of the superhero genre while adding nuanced characters and adult concerns. Englehart's prose is clear and stylish, but not overly mannered. "The Point Man" isn't Shakespeare, but it's a smashing good time.

Entertaining Action Story

Although a bit dated now, still entertaining reading. Great book for the airplane. Story is about a Vietnam vet working as a DJ in San Francisco. A carved lion which his uncle gave him is mysteriously stolen. His new boss, an attractive young woman who is seemingly all business, seduces him. He continues to try to track down his stolen lion, meeting some interesting good people and bad people along the way.
