Introduces, in rhyming text and illustrations, the letters of the alphabet as two combative pigs vie with each other to see which can eat his way from A to Z without missing a letter.
I have owned this book for several years now, and think it is one of the best small books for children. The illustrations are unique and the storyline is witty and poignant. Unlike stories like Captain Underpants and the Wrath of the Wicked Wedgy Woman, or books that encourage crude humor and simple sentances like "Jane ate the apple", this book has a class and sophistication that has often been lost in the struggle for amusement to kids. I think that the book should be read to every child and encourages a little something more than the farting, burping, and insulting protagonists found in books today in an effort to relate to the ill-raised children and encourage them to read about rudeness and offensive behavior. If it stretches the mind a little bit and makes them ask "What is an artichoke?" or "What is a maitre'd?",then so much the better. Every child should have a little classy stimulation and "The Pigs Alphabet" is a prime example of light humor, educational alphabet, and fun things that you don't hear of every day like "the unfamiliar uglifruit" or "artichoke, a pricklish, ticklish task". The rhyme is delightful and the little bubbles of what the pigs say are very cute, and always accentuate the letters. Where else are kids going to read about "reddish, radish-relish", "quince preserve", or "watercress"? I loved this book and read it to my younger sister often. She is 7 years old and has Pervasive Developmental Disorder, and thinks that the book is hilarious. She requests it all the time when I offer to read her a book, saying "hungry pigs, hungry pigs!". It is a delightful book, and I think anyone that has a chance to buy it or read it should, whether your 6, 17, 32, or 59, or any other age. I can't stop raving about it.
