For anyone who likes politics sans idealism. this book accounts the campaign to prosecute George W. Bush for war crimes and impeachment, among other things. Of course, it didn't happen, and if there were a moral to this story, it is that the system is fixed, from politicians to media. The book reads something like a documentary, outlining the methods she uses, people she encounters, and evidence she and others collect to strengthen the case. Frustrating but good.

If one is seeking a dispassionate scholarly account of constitutional issues as they unfolded during the presidency of George W. Bush, this is not the book for you. "The People V. Bush: One Lawyer's Campaign to Bring the President to Justice and the National Grassroots Movement She Encounters Along the Way" is a passionate call to action to punish individuals in the Bush administration, especially the president himself, for criminal activity. Author Charlotte Dennett believes it is imperative to prosecute representatives of the Bush administration for what she thinks of as a shredding the Constitution by a rogue presidency, and especially for perceived war crimes. She argues that this is critical to prevent a future rogue presidency from continuing such actions. At sum, this is an insider's account of a growing legal crusade to prosecute senior U.S. government officials who made decisions that overturned longstanding civil liberties and abrogated the Geneva Conventions and other international restrictions on governments involved in conflict. It is a stunning and frustrating account of how slowly and seemingly ineffectively the wheels of justice grind in this endeavor to bring officials to account for perceived misdeeds. I was struck in reading this book of my studies of other negative episodes in history in which individuals have come to grips with despicable acts. The first part of the process is to determine what actually happened and to admit the crime. The second part is to bring those responsible to justice. Finally, those who come after must be educated about the episode and taught to avoid similar actions in the future. While Charlotte Dennett is seeking to bring those responsible for perceived abuses in the Bush administration to justice, the first part of the process has yet to be completed. We now have a fair understanding of what took place--although I would contend that there is still much more to know about this--there is certainly no consensus among Americans that crimes had actually been committed. Indeed, I see push back on such assertions from all sides. Where does that leave the United States? Time will tell. Charlotte Dennett has done a service in helping to work through this process, and to explain to others how and why this might be accomplished.

Had Charlotte Dennett become Attorney General in Vermont, Bush would have been indicted and prosecuted for murder. It's too bad that that did not happen. This book is very well written and documented. I highly recommend that this book be read by anyone interested in how someone like Bush could get very close to becoming a king in our great country, and how we the people can make sure that can not happen again. If you have ever had any doubt that serious crimes were, in fact, committed by George W. Bush and high-level members of his administration, this is the book to read. Charlotte Dennett's message is simple: if we do not prosecute high-level officials for crimes committed in office, then the stage will have been set for future rogue presidencies. We must not allow this to happen. Accountability now. One of this book's greatest strengths - and there are many - is its extraordinarily honest and personal feel. As I read the book, I almost had the sense that I was actually there as the events unfolded. I could not put this book down. If you care about what is happening to our democracy and whether we will continue to live in a free society, read this book and support Charlotte Dennett's very important work in the accountability movement. Your children and grandchildren will thank you.
