I found that this book provided a thorough comprehensive history of the Palace of Versailles and the social history that took place there. Primarily focused on the Palace and secondary chateaux, it provides students with good insight into the construction methods of the times. For those who enjoy gardening, it goes a long way to explain the need for elaborate gardens. The most interesting aspects of the book focus on the early history of construction and garden design. A good style for young readers, it would also be servicable to tourists visiting Versailles for the first time. The major drawback is the use of black and white photos.
