The Orient Sports Express: The Pioneer Asian-Americans who Reached the Pinnacle of Competition

Asian-Americans were the subject of racial barriers since the late 19th century. The Chinese Exclusion Act, the Asian Exclusion Act, the Executive Order 9066 made them stronger as a community. The overcame, excelled, and became role model to their society. Their spirits stayed alive through sports. The Hong Wah Kues were the first all Chinese professional basketball team dubbed as the Chinese Globetrotters. The Asahi Baseball Club of Hawaii just celebrated its 100th anniversary a few years ago. Wat Misaka became the first person of color to be drafted in the NBA, Sammy Lee became the first Olympian Gold Medalist, Lenn Sakata was the first to win the World Series, Golden Girl Kristi Yamaguchi was the first to win gold in the Winter Games, and so many more reaching the pinnacle. These athletes became ambassadors, hall of famers, philanthropists, and leaders in America. More than anything else, these Asian-Americans have always remained loyal to their country. 12,000 Japanese-Americans volunteered from their internment camps to go fight for America when they were needed in WWII and took home the most medal of honors and awards. They were raised to shine in the classroom, topped with their performing skills and aced with their athletic abilities on the field. This is a trek to celebrate their achievements and opening of opportunities for others.
