The One That Got Away

I love the theme of this book - second chances at love! Many people experience the "right person/wrong time" relationship, and it's nice to see that the hero and heroine got the chance to make things right. I enjoyed the very authentic small town setting, too. Ms. Shaw does a great job of blending relationships and suspense to create a full, well-rounded novel!

Private school teacher Regan is in the midst of planning her summer vacation when she receives a call from her mother saying her beloved Uncle Potbelly has died. With no time to think, she packs her bags and heads to her hometown of Wright City, Texas to deal with the loss. Upon arrival she soon discovers Uncle Potbelly didn't die of natural causes, he was murdered. In THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY, readers are taken on a suspenseful ride as Regan investigates the death of Uncle Potbelly with her high school crush, Elias Johnson. Elias has returned to Wright City to recover from his near-death accident as a DEA Agent. When his mother and family conspire to unite him with the one that got away, he doesn't need much of a nudge. With them trying to find out who killed Uncle Potbelly and the occurrences of more deaths and accidents, the couple grows closer. No longer do they have a childhood crush, they are embarking on a full-fledge romance. In THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY there is suspense, romance and familial issues laced throughout the novel. Shaw keeps reader's attention with the suspenseful plot and keeps the romance sizzling with the frisky antics of the main characters. In fact, there were some laugh-out-loud moments. Although some of the storyline was predictable, it was an enjoyable story with some of my favorite elements: love, romance, humor and suspense. This was an amazing story. I felt like the author was inspired to tell what could be a story based on anyones real life experience. Regan who is a teacher must return to her home town to take care of the affairs of her "Uncle" Potbelly who was murdered. She stays with her mother who is a woman who never wanted her children because they "trapped her in a life she did not want", she made their lives miserable especially Regan. Regan deals with life growing up the only way she knows how by finding comfort in food. Regan has gotten into shape while in Fort Worth and when Regan is at the funeral home for Uncle Potbellys' visitation she see the "Love of her Life". Elias was her study partner in school and she had such a crush on him but he dated the "popular pretty girls" in school. Now at the sight of him she feels the attraction even stronger than before and it seems Elias is feeling something as well. The way they "get together" is what has happened to people I know. When staying in your parents home you respect their wishes. Regans' mother starts trying to act like a mother which is very strange for Regan and they have some unusual conversations in strange places. The crime in the story was told in a extremely realistic fashion as I can atest to as a retired Drug Enforcement Agent. I can not wait for her next book to come out. I started reading and could not stop until I finish the book, about 12 hours later. This and her other books are a must read!
