Cross-species cooperation helps to save a leafy home in an endearing, pastoral tale that features a final pop-up surprise. Deep in the forest one morning, Pigeon Post is going about her usual business when she notices a huge X on the trunk of the old tree. All the tree's residents have a different theory about whom is to blame, until Captain Crow solves the mystery - but can they stop their quarreling before it's too late? Ruth Brown's delightful tale of cooperation and conservation, complemented by her luminous illustrations, is sure to engage readers from the start of the story to the wonderful pop-up tree on the final spread.
My oldest received this book as a gift when he was about 2 yrs old and Loved it. With all the animals that live in the tree, there is at least one for your child to relate to, whatever his mood is that day. The illustrations are gorgeous watercolors. And the message of the book is positive, without being preachy. We read the book frequently for many months. Now our 2-yr-old twins have discovered the book, and the oldest, now 4, is in Love with it again. The surprise pop-up at the end just seals the deal. I've bought several copies to give as gifts.
Sure to be a favorite!

This book reads like a classic and deserves to become one. The message of acceptance & collaboration is clear while not preachy and the pop-up at the end a magical surprise. My almost-4-year old is enchanted . . . and so am I.
