Excellent Book!

Very organized and detailed. I'm surprised all of this information can fit easily into one little book!

Basic relevant information for the music therapist

Music Therapy Groupwork with Special Needs Children: The Evolving Process My name is Karen D. Goodman and I am a professor of music therapy.I am the author of Music Therapy Groupwork with Special Needs Children: The Evolving Process. As an educator and clinician for the past 30 years, I have found Dr. Hanser's book to contain basic relevant information for the music therapist. Although the original version was written many years ago, the information has become more and more essential in reminding the music therapist that institutions we work for require preparation and accountability for our work. Dr. Hanser provides a clear sequential description of how to set up a music therapy session and evaluate a music therapy session. Although she has a behavioral background, the information need not be read in that context. I believe that all theoretical orientations in music therapy lend themselves to preparation for a session. At Montclair State University where I direct music therapy, we continue to use this book with undergraduate students.

The New Music Therapist's Handbook

This was a great Buy! I felt like my son may need some music therapy and so I got this book. It was an easy read, very descriptive and leaves you with no guess work as to the purpose and function of what music therapy is. It explains so many concepts that one could do this @ home with your own Kiddies!

Extremely Helpful

I'm trying to decide how to direct my master's research in Music Therapy, and the Handbook has been vastly helpful for me. The organization of the chapters by subject is wonderfully clear and spans a fantastic range of therapy topics. Her writing style is professional but warm and I find it very easy to read and comprehend. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Music Therapy! It's a must have!

A Very Complete Primer on Music Therapy

I am a registered music therapist. I found this to be a very understandable and easy to read book. It outlines everything a music therapist needs to know in a clinical setting. It would be a great book for an intro to music therapy class. It sets the tone for a solid music therapy program.First, it defines music therapy with different populations, i.e., behavior disorders, developmental disabilities, psychiatric disorders, medical patients, etc. In short, all of the places where music therapists work.Second, it outlines the steps: Identifying the therapeutic objectives, assessment, designing a therapeutic plan, determining strategies, implementing the plan, and evaluating the music therapy. Each step is a chapter in the book, and each chapter ends with a selection of other books for further reading. In a nutshell, this is goal-oriented music therapy. If all university programs educated their students (and not all do) as concisely as this book, there would be a lot more good music therapists walking around.
