A young prince is left in the care of an uncle while his father sails off to war. The regent, the prince's uncle, has ambitions to take the throne and accuses the prince of witchcraft. The shamans of this country believe the prince to be innocent, and instead of allowing the regent to have the prince executed, they banish him into the wilderness, naked, and without tools or weapons. The young man is forbidden to stay in human dwelling, to use iron, hunt or fight with a bow, ride a horse, or to have any communion with other humans. The prince survives, aided by a raven, a wolf, a horse and a seal. He fashions knives and spears tipped with obsidian. As he grows stronger, physically and spiritually, the regent sends out mercenaries to kill him. They do not succeed. Originally written in Japanese, THE NAKED PRINCE was a very popular book in Japan and was selected as recommended reading for school libraries.
