I realy enjoyed this book. It's one of the best, if not the best, of the several Falconhurst books I've read. The "Mustee," (the son of a white man and an octoroon), who becomes the white overseer at Falconhurst while Hammond Maxwell is away, is a very interesting character- well educated, articulate, smart, strong, kind and sensitive. Quite different than the typical white man in the Mississippi locale where the story takes place. The book is also a character story of Lucretia Borgia, who runs the house. You root for the Mustee, but he's up against a lot of predudice, inflexibility and stupidity. The book is a page turner.
