In the 100 days of genocide that ravaged Rwanda in 1994, one million people were killed and as many as 500,000 women and girls were raped. No one was spared. Grandmothers were raped in front of their... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This book was difficult to read. The horrible things these men did to these women is shocking. And it wasn't just women. Girls as young as 12 were raped. There's even a story about a boy, 13, who was raped by a woman. Rape during genocide or war seems to be more a common thing them we wish to believe. Something that no one wants to talk about. After the genocide in Rwanda the population was 70% female. As the book says "Women occupy 56% of the seats in Rwanda parliament, the highest portion in the world, and they are well represented at various levels of government. Women also account for 55% of the work force, and own 41% of Rwandan businesses. Empowering women can rejuvenate post-conflict economies and serve to fight poverty." Sounds great, but what a way to have to get something that should of been rightfully theirs in the first place. Readers, don't close your eyes to this. This systematic raping during conflict has to stop and it wont if we close our eyes to it. I checked this book out from the library. Check your library, if it doesn't have it then make a request for your library to purchase it. At the end of the book there is a list of organization to donate to, to help the victims of the genocide.
