"The Mars One Crew Manual" should best be viewed as an introduction for older children and young adults. The emphasis is less on technical detail (although there are lots of facts-n-figures to add verisimilitude) and more on the experience of living and working in space for extended periods. It's quite similar to Joels' other "Space Shuttle Crew Manual", which is also geared towards older children and young adults, except that "Mars One" is of course fictional. It does draw on real-world experience and technology, though: much of the hardware described in the book is taken from Skylab, while the Mars lander and other more speculative technology is based on real studies from the 1960s. Unfortunately the book has not aged well: It's an artefact of its time, when the Space Shuttle was expected to offer safe and cost-effective access to space, before the Challenger and Columbia (and tight post-cold-war budgets) put limits on these sorts of dreams. Nonetheless, a very good book for the Mars enthusiasts' library -- the illustrations and fold-out color artwork alone are definitely worth the price of a used copy.
Mars One Crew Manual

This book is a very good book for all Mars and Space enthusiasts. I have read it multipule times and each time I learn something new. This book shows you the vehicle to get to mars, the living quarters, the landing procedures, emergency procedures and much more. In addition to all of this the book has several pull-outs which include one of the martian landscape. The book tells you what kind of crew they choose: their hobbies, interests, religion, location, and many other things. The book tells you about the test that the astronauts had to go through in order to get on the Mars mission. The book also tells you about all the things that (you) will do on a Mars mission. You have a schedule that you need to follow according to your assignment. The details about how you live and what you can take with are very realistic.I thought that this book was a great read and I would also suggest reading " The Space Shuttle Operator's Manual" by the same authors.
