I did not realize this was as small a book as it was. However it is packed with the greatest research anyone could ask for. This author did his homework. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to know the early life of George Washington. He was truly a man "appointed for such a time as this". Without the foundation George Washington received from his father and brother's he could have not lead this country in the most crucial moments of it's young life. Throughout reading this book I kept saying to myself I want what he had, unwavering dedication, a selfless man of integrity, compassionate yet commanding, an impeccable reputation and yet a humble understanding of his own shortcomings. Truly a man committed to God and country. Every American should read this book, it will explain why we are in the pickle we are in as a nation today,(forgive us God, we have abandoned our roots that made us great).
Character we need today.

I read this book twice; once in 1985, and again in May of 2009. Perhaps the times have changed so radically in these last 19 years, that the character, and the faithful nurture of those roots, jumped out at me as what we need in our leadership again. People with courage and strength, but not full of themselves to think they are above the commoner. This would be an excellent book for any new parent, or grandparent to use to set an example of care, nurture, education, and encouragement of a child into civil service. It is written with a pureness that would almost intimate a personal relationship, yet we know two centuries separated General Washington from General Wilbur. We, as a modern people, have forgotten how much difference a person of character and integrity can make for a people. It was also great to read something without todays constant spin to tear down those treasures of the past, the hero's to which our children used to aspire. Refreshing, educational, beneficial, and inspiring.
Well researched

Perhaps a bit tough for the younger reader, but well researched and presented with short chapters. I especially appreciate the author's research (and debunking) of unfavorable characterizations of Washington.

This is a wonderful book for someone wanting a short read on a complex subject. The author has great style and is a superb writer. This is the best biographical book I have read and has spurred me on to read more about Washington.

The writer of this book went to great lengths to make sure that all the information in it was completely accurate, and also made a huge effort to include information that isn't available anywhere else. A wonderful book to read for anyone wanting to understand the man George Washington by understanding the boy.
