The premier chronicler of the American West, legendary storyteller Zane Grey has captivated millions of readers with his timeless adventures of life, death, gunfire, and justice. This is the Old West in all its glory and grandeur. Forged in blood. Enflamed by passion. Emblazoned with bullets. . . In the law of the gun, a man must shoot his way to innocence. At least that's how Captain McKelly of the Texas Rangers puts it to Buck Duane. On the run for killing a man to save his own skin, Duane must now infiltrate the deadly Chelsedine gang. These ruthless rustlers are running amok in Texas and it's going to take a matchless gunfighter to stop their rampage. With the legendary Rangers providing firepower, Duane has more than a fighting chance. Or so he thinks. When he uncovers a secret that could destroy them all, the bullet storm is biblical--and a legend rises out of the dust. "In a changing world it is comforting. . .and entertaining to spend a little while in the company of Zane Grey." --New York Times "Zane Grey epitomized the mythical West that should have been." --True West "Grey was a champion of the American wilderness and the men and women who tamed the Old West."--Booklist
What has traditionally been one of the best selling of Zane Grey's novels, and considered by some to be one of his best, I find far inferior to the two novels from which this book was created by the editors at Harper Brothers. The two novels, Last of the Duanes and Rangers of the Lone Star stand far above this book. There are too many missing events and characters in this version. The female love interest is completely missing in Part Two of the book and there are many other unanswered questions created by the melding of these two works. But, if one is to have a complete set of Zane Grey, then this book is collectable and readable; but NOT one of his best. It is however far superior to anything being published today. I'd say this book is average, or little below average.

This was a great book. I read a minimum of (1) western novel per month and have done so for years. I have read works from most of the well known writers. I have saved Zane Grey for last. Boy what I have missed. This book is fast paced and the character is so interesting that the pages just fly by. Don't miss this one.
A classic western

This novel was first published in 1914 just as the world plunged in WWI. The thing about Zane Grey's writing style is that he had an attention to detail and told the reader about the inner life of the hero. In places this book is like a Victorian novel for women with a code of honor that is from the past. The adventure in which the outlaw Buck Duane is nearly driven to earth by people for crimes he never did stands out as new way to see people and the law? Poor people don't always run because they are guilty, but just because they know they won't get an even break? I enjoyed this novel which I think is almost overwritten as western that are more modern go. Zane Grey had his own code of honor and justice and has left us his interpretation of the wild west.

This book, though an oldie, kept me on the edge of my seat. Grey is the masterof western and his descriptions are incredible. I am 13 but I was captured by this gritty novel.
Thrilling!

I really enjoyed the story of Buckley Duane, and of how his unmerited misfortune turned to his favor. Mr. Grey did a fantastic job making his main character come alive to the reader. I intend to read more books by this author.
