Frank Lloyd Wright: The Early Works of the Great Architect

The importance of the architect to the quality and character of any society is not usually as widely regarded as it deserves to be. While every past civilization is, to a considerable extent, recognized and judged by its architecture, its creators are in general little known or revered; it would seem as though the buildings which are of such importance to our lives have spontaneously appeared as if by magic. A Reprint of the famous Frank Lloyd Wright "Wendingen" series.

This book is a compilation writings by European and American architects and critics on the work of Frank Lloyd Wright prior to 1925, the date of original publications. Most, but not all, of the articles are in English. All are accompanied by period drawings and photographs. The book is not only a comprehensive look at Wright in 1925, but a sampling of contemporary attitudes towards his work and the architectural philosophy with which it was viewed. Most of the illustrations have been published elsewhere, but the influential nature of the original publication, and the views of the contributing writers make this a valuable addition to any library.

Surprisingly appealing though it's all black and white

I thought I'd be bored with a book that focused on his early work which I find to be less appealing than his later work and especially one with no color photos. This book is a facsimile of the original, "...Dutch magazine Wendingen (that in 1925)...devoted seven issues to the work of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright." It's 12 3/4" tall x 12 1/4". The dust cover has a small photo of him on the front and a large black and white photo on the back. The hard cover is black. The book is about evenly split between exterior photos of buildings, floor plans and drawings. There's only a few interior photos and 2 or 3 photos of models of buildings. You see some of his classic design work. About a third of the book is text, all in English. Not a bad book really and invaluable if you want to see how his work looked at the beginning of his career.
