Detectives Milton and Jimmy send an invitation and plane tickets to Dora and Josie Winslow to attend a quilt show in Philadelphia as a token of their appreciation. At first, the gesture does not entice the sisters to leave the comfort and safety of their own home until Josie calls Anthony. He arranges to meet them in Philadelphia and accompany them to the east coast where they may continue their traveling and search for patterns to continue their guild state quilt project. Anthony has been given the assignment to investigate a case involving stolen books belonging to Sophie Wainwright, a Cooperstown, New York, resident. Anthony and the sisters also meet Milton and Jimmy in Philadelphia where Milton seems to take a liking to Dora. Afterward, Anthony and the sisters rent a car and drive to Sophie's home in Cooperstown. She invites them to stay with her while Anthony conducts his investigation. While there, the sisters see a quilt that Sophie has made of her favorite New England authors. The appliqu?d quilt is of author homes in Concord and Cambridge. Sophie and the sisters discover they have many interests in common, including books, quilts, authors as well as history.Anthony concludes that the case of the stolen books is too complicated to solve in a matter of days so he encourages the sisters to proceed to the New England States on their own. Sophie offers to be their guide as well as providing a chauffeur and a car for their excursion. They tour the states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine concentrating mostly on literary sites. Sophie sketches author homes for a new quilt project for a quilt show in New York. The sisters gather patterns from every state they visit. Josie and Anthony exchange phone calls commiserating with each other that they can't be together. In the meantime, Milton comes to Cooperstown to help Anthony with the case. Books continue to disappear and show up for sale in bookstores. The cast of suspects is limited to a former housekeeper, the current housekeeper Jane, her daughter and son-in-law as well as Sophie's niece and a bookstore owner. Who has been taking the books as well when and how the books disappear elude both Anthony and Milton.During the trip, Sophie becomes weary and returns home with her chauffeur, leaving the sisters to their own recourse. Since Anthony is in Maine following a lead, he drives to Massachusetts and picks up the sisters and drives them to the three states they haven't visited yet. Milton feels left our and joins the sisters and Anthony in Maine and accompanies them on their return trip home. Milton does his best to charm Dora but she is somewhat resistant. When they return to Cooperstown, Sophie talks the sisters into helping her with her new quilt project. They decide to make a row by row quilt, the panels reflecting the various recent author homes they have toured. The quilt takes several weeks to complete before it is shown at the quilt show.Anthony and Milton hire a genealogist to research Sophie's family history for they feel the answer to the stolen books lies there. After further investigation of personal records and such, Anthony and Milton fill in the gaps that Sophie fails to tell them. Just before the case is solved, Sophie releases Anthony from his detective duties much to his dismay; however, Anthony and Milton continue to investigate until they discover the family secrets to explain the strange disappearance of books.
