THE HOME FOR UNWANTED GIRLS by Joanna Goodman I knew going into this that it was going to be a heavy read as it’s based on true events. In 1950s Quebec, Canada, orphanages were converted into psychiatric institutions in order to take advantage of government funding. This resulted in many children being wrongly certified as mentally ill. As you can imagine, the treatment of the children and patients in these institutions was abhorrent. The denial of the Catholic Church and nuns of any involvement or responsibility is equally disgraceful. I felt Maggie’s love life and concerns over taking over her family’s seed store overshadowed the importance of the historical context. I wish the story focused more (or equally) on Elodie’s perspective and life within the orphanage. Overall, the book started out strong, but it didn’t quite meet my expectations. Rating: 3/5 ⭐️
