The History of Piracy by Philip Gosse is a comprehensive account of the origins, development, and decline of piracy throughout history. The book explores the various types of piracy, including those of the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Far East, and provides a detailed examination of the lives and exploits of famous pirates such as Blackbeard, Calico Jack, and Captain Kidd. Gosse delves into the political and economic factors that led to the rise of piracy and the impact it had on global trade and commerce. He also explores the methods used by governments and navies to combat piracy, including the use of privateers and the establishment of anti-piracy laws. The book covers a wide range of historical periods, from ancient times to the present day, and includes accounts of piracy in the modern era, such as the hijacking of ships by Somali pirates. Overall, The History of Piracy is an engaging and informative read that provides a fascinating insight into one of the most enduring and captivating aspects of human history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
This modern reprint of a 1932 classic is an invaluable history of piracy. This book, along with David Cordingly's "Under the Black Flag" and Daniel Defoe's "A General History of the Pyrates" (Defoe was writing as Captain Johnson), are the best volumes on piracy I have yet to read. Gosse's history is lively and comprehensive.
An excellent introduction to piracy worldwide.

Philip Gosse has written a thorough overview of worldwide piracy; concentrating, of course, in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, but including the Far East. Even three cases of female pirates are covered. The subject is described both in breadth and depth, with many "sea stories" included. The only drawback is that some famous pirates, like Jean Lafitte, receive little coverage.
