The Golden Verses

This was a great read! An old man sells six, aged Bibles to a village bookstore, saying that there are several people in town who need these Bibles. The Bibles are special--they contain passages printed in gold ink that come to life when one reads them, forever changing the reader's life. However, there is someone else lurking around who also wants the Bibles--at any cost. The plot, suspenseful with unexpected turns, kept me riveted to the pages. The language is superb. There were many places I had to look up and say to myself, "That's clever--I've never heard it put that way!" One of my favorite passages related to William, the banker: "It was too bad he had never thought of visiting a psychiatrist. The rich fields of his obsessions would have invited years of lobal plowing (p. 49)." I read the book a few months ago, and still have flashbacks of some of the characters and the scenes in the book, just as if I had been there. The message I got: The scriptures reveal to us how we can all overcome our old selves. I purchase many Christian-themed books and lend them out to friends, so this was a great book to add to my collection.
