like Brat Farrar, except totally different

I bought this book because it was compared to one of my all-time favourite English novels, Brat Farrar by Josephine Tey. Turns out this is kind of a homage to Brat Farrar and makes reference to it, but the story is very different. It's set in Canada, in the present, and it's about a young woman trying to solve an old mystery. It's still entertaining and enjoyable and fun to read, though, whether you're familiar with Brat Farrar or not. Funny and sad in parts and a well-paced mystery. I recommend it.

a great read

This absorbing novel about a woman's search for an old buried treasure is suspenseful, satisfying, and intelligent. The main character is smart and wry and given to dead-on observations about her parents' upper-class milieu. It's also one of those rare books where the good guys read books, and lots of them. I loved the villain, too--a real old-fashioned cad. Once I got into it, I couldn't put it down and was sad to see it end.
