The Football That Won

My first graders love this book! My class is filled with pro football fans, and this is one of the few books on the subject. Although the vocabulary is challenging for 1st graders, they can read it because of the cumulative pattern the author uses and because they know so much of the vocabulary of the sport. EXCELLENT!

I was excited to discover "The Football That Won" in paperback. My hardcover copy is well-loved and well-worn. As a reading specialist, I appreciate the cumulative pattern the author used. My first-graders have no problem reading the more complex vocabulary because of the context of a football game. And the repetitive nature of the language means the kids get to read words like "floated and flew," "crushed," "circled," and "trophy" time after time. As a Bronco fan who has attended two Superbowls, I appreciate the authentic nature of the sights and sounds of the Superbowl. "The Football That Won" is my favorite sports book--and my kids, too. They also enjoy the basketball story "Swish" by Bill Martin, Jr. and Michael Sampson.

This is a wonderful book that most all students would enjoy reading! Keep writing, Dr. Sampson!

Clever addition to the genre of predictable text. Excellent to use with imergent readers to increase phonemic awareness with young students. Go job, Dr. Sampson. (Ted Rand illustrations are great as always.)
