This series continues to improve as you read it

This is the second book in the Hawklan series and follows on from "the call of the sword". The unthinkable happens when Loman's daughter Tirilen is kidnapped by High Guards from Fyorlund. Hawklan finds that he has to go against his healers instincts and offer violence to help rescue her. He also finds that he has an unexpected ability for violence and that he is, unknown to himself, an expert swordsman and military field commander. The rescue of Tirilen leads Hawklan and his friends to finally realise that things outside Orthlund are much worse than they ever imagined and that the peaceful land of Fyorlund across the mountains has been slowly corrupted in their lifetime and they must investigate or find themselves overwhelmed in the second coming of the evil Sumeral. This book is a well written and enjoyable continuation from the events in the first book of this series. It could be read alone, but the real benefit comes with reading it directly after the first book. These are a well thought out fantasy series that has no pretensions to being another "lord of the rings" but is still a very enjoyable read for those who love this genre by this lesser known British author.
