lovely and lyrical

This is a lovely and lyrical story of a young woman struggling to become the subject of her own narrative and not just the object of male desire. It's set, in part, in South Africa just as white rule is being overthrown, and in part in the U.S. It is written in lush and charged prose, primarily in the present tense, giving it a sense of immediacy and urgency. Although strongly narrative, it shifts around in time, allowing the structure, as well as the narrative, to convey a sense of profound dislocation. The author employs a variety of "experimental" strategies without diminishing the pleasure a reader will experience in reading The Eye of the Moon.
