Book Overview

Peter David's study on the Epistle of James is a contribution to The New International Greek Testament Commentary, a series based on the UBS Greek New Testament, which attempts to provide thorough exegesis of the text that is sensitive to theological themes as well as to the details of the historical, linguistic, and textual context.

Another great work. This series continues to impress me.

Another must have for your collection. You won't be disappointed. The only thing that bothered me was that the author seemed to get lost in the fact that he needed to write a critical work. Oh yes, his authorship skills would land him praise in all the right academic circles of elites who would toast him for making sure all the right parts of a critical work are just were they need to be. Unfortunately, Peter Davids got lost in the academia of this work and forgot to speak to our hearts when writing. I would forewarn authors who tackle works like this that speaking to ones heart and touching our souls is first and foremost to the structure of the work. The work comes off dry and wooden headed because of this. No, you cannot fault his critique and exploration of this James Epistle, but again, the work would have taken on much more life had the author written it from a place that was wrought out of his own life experiences along with the critical apparatuses. Just my opinion.

Superior Commentary

I am one who has worked extensively with the book of James and came upon this book recently to find it refreshingly scholarly and sensible. It's more than a reference book--it's a good read.

Make sure you know your Greek first....

This is an excellent commentary, useful to those who need to go deep into the text. But it is not for any who don't want to take a close look at the Greek text, as very few portions are given translation. If you don't have a good solid grasp of Greek, you may want to stay will Martin's commentary, or perhaps Moo's.
