I first read this book twenty years ago. It had been recommended by my pastor as a good starting point for the study of the Bible. I found it to be limited to the Old Testament. However, it explains how the Bible was created; it explains many of the nuances of the words used by the Hebrews; it explains how the customs of the people are reflected in the Biblical stories; it explains the historical implications that are suggested. The wording is clear, and at a level that is very easy to understand. I highly recommend this to anyone who is beginning a study of the Bible.
