I was sure, when I looked up information about this author, that I would find a wealth of other novels and other pseudonyms, because she writes with such mastery it seems she's been at it for a long time. But unfortunately the name is obscure and the book, old and out of print, rare. Hallquist wrote an exciting, eventful, fulfilling book with realistic sensuality and an unforgettable heroine. I truly felt claustrophobic and, for the first time ever in a gothic novel, frightened, by the heroine's seeming descent into madness and possible incarceration. Never was there was more haunting villain. I still think of her horrible snake sometimes.
