Everything in One Book!

The only single volume I have found that contains all 4 novels and 56 short stories that Sir Arthur wrote about Sherlock Holmes!

As described

False advertising

Highly disappointed, I ordered Algren print copy, and it came in not at all large print. State of the book was good, but it’s for my elderly grandmother who has cataracts and can’t see that small of words. This was her Christmas gift and I’m very disappointed.

MOST Economical Complete Sherlock Holmes Fully Illustrated!!

I thought this is not complete Sherlock Holmes. I was wrong!! It has not only All 58 Strand Magazine version stories fully illustrated but also Two non-Strand Novels (non illustrated). So, This is The MOST Economical Complete Sherlock Holmes Fully Illustrated!!! Even if you have another version already, Must have this too!!

One of the greatest collections of the classic adventures

This beautiful suede book contains The Adventures, Memoirs, and Return of Sherlock Holmes, plus The Hound of the Baskervilles. The real attraction of this book lies in the original sketches that were created by Sidney Paget that were included. Each picture was meticulously drawn and helps to convey atmosphere of the stories. One is drawn into a world of horse-drawn carriages, gaslights, and foggy London air. Also inluded is a both moving and factual introduction plus the format of that the stories were presented in in the Stand magazine, where they were originally published. The reader is drawn into the comfortable ambience of the brilliant Sherlock Holmes, humble Watson, and the memorable cases which they solved. It is a shame that this book is no longer in print, and if any reader of this review should ever come in contact with it, I would urge that person to buy it and add it among their library. This is a true classic.

A must-have for everyone

The other reviewers have given this item 5 stars and called it indispensable. I cannot gainsay either judgment, nor would I desire to. I first read these two volumes when I was about 11 and they were just a couple years old (first published 1967); when the Speckled Band could give me nightmares. I bought my boxed set (2nd edition, 6th printing, 1971) from the downtown Boston Barnes and Noble when I started college in 1977. They have traveled everywhere with me since. This version of the canon cannot be praised too highly. The first hundred pages of volume 1 (which is about 690 pages total) consist of essays about the background of the author and characters, real life models for the protagonists, early translations and dramatizations on stage and celluloid, clubs devoted to the immortal pair, and other fascinating background info. There are helpful maps of London and England as well.Once the stories begin (and flow into Volume 2, which is an even heftier 824 pages), the lucky reader enjoys not only plentiful marginal notes (not end or footnotes, but comments right next to the text where each reference appears) about guns, money, locales, historic events, and just about anything one might not know if one weren't a Victorian. There are also reproductions of illustrations that accompanied the stories in the Strand and other magazines where they initially appeared. This is a pair of books to treasure and reread (I've read a number of my favorites, such as "Silver Blaze" and "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle," aloud to friends, family, and lovers) all one's life.

Fabulous!

Thrilled recently to discover the excellent Jeremy Brett filmed episodes of Sherlock Holmes, I then took to reading the original stories and enjoyed virtually every one of them. There are a few plots which nearly duplicate other ones, but the 56 short stories and 4 novels comprise a stunning collection of fiction which evokes the atmosphere of late Victorian era England in a straightforward prose that grabs you instantly and makes you turn page after page and then read story after story. As you get further and further into the world Doyle created, you'll begin to hear the sounds of horse carriages, smell candles and gas lamps, and also, in the manner of Holmes, to begin to truly NOTICE the small details of life which may end up meaning far more than they seem to at first. Sherlock Holmes is one of the most intriguing characters in all of literature. You'll end up wishing you could've met him or, even better, followed him into the bowels of London or into the English countryside as he probes a mystery, running only on adrenalin. I also recommend Doyle's fine book of "Round The Fire" stories.

Of course it's great. It's Sherlock Holmes.

We all know that these are the best detective stories ever, so I'll contain my review to this book.It is the only one volume edition. The Holmes canon consists of four novels :Hound of the Baskervilles, Sign of Four, Study in Scarlet, and Valley of Fear, and five collections of short stories: Adventures of S.H., Memoirs of S.H., Return of S.H., His Last Bow, and Casebook of S.H. These are often published separately, but this Doubleday edition contains every one of them in one package. If you're really into measuring footprints and analyzing cigarette ash then this is the book you need.
