Book Overview

William Barclay testifies to the Bible's unique value as an inspired book and gives clear advice on the best way to read it. He tells how the biblical writings came into being and finally gained acceptance as Scripture. And he explains the significance and the status of the Apocrypha. Most important of all, William Barclay presents the Bible as a book to be read and enjoyed today - a light in the darkness of a world that has lost its way.

Barclay's original text has been edited and revised by Professor John W. Rogerson, who has also written a new introduction. Rogerson is the head of the Department of Biblical Studies at the University of Sheffield and an authority on the Old Testament. This is a required text for "Lay Speakers Lead Bible Study: Advanced Course." (Abingdon Press, 1997)

Exellent

This book was recommended by a bible study teacher of many years. I'm finding it very informative and enjoyable to read. The writing style and content is excellent; good for use in class or individual study. It is very detailed and enlightening: it covers the Old and New Testaments, Apocrypha, maps, and "approaches" and "aids" to bible study. I believe it can be read again over time to continually improve one's understanding...

Barclay -- Clear and Concise

I teach an adult Sunday School class based on discussing scripture. We read a variety of writings in the Bible, and this year we focus on Psalms. Even though I've taken a number of Bible courses, William Barclay's "Introducing the Bible" has become an invaluable aid in my class preparation and thinking. Barclay is clear, direct, and easy to read and understand. His work is especially helpful in tackling Revelation. I think...

Must-Read to Understand Today's Christian Scholarship

This little book is mandatory reading because Barclay is widely cited and hailed as "one of the world's great biblical scholars". His book concisely reflects the sad shape of Christianity and its scholarship today. Barclay states that "For a variety of reasons, it is not possible to hold... that the Bible is literally and, as it were physically, the word of God". He neatly skewers the majority of Christians who hold to...
