In 1779, a search for her father brings Roxanna to the Kentucky frontier-but she discovers instead a young colonel, a dark secret...and a compelling reason to stay.
This was my fourth Laura Frantz book that I have read. It takes place mostly in a fort in the Kentucky wilderness during the American Revolution. This story is about Roxana Rowan, a spinster who after some tragic cercumstances decides to travel out to the fort her father is stationed at. When she arrives she finds out her father is on a campaign. When he never returns our heroine finds out that after a promise the Colonel Cassius McLinn made to her father and the growing hostilities outside of the fort that she is forced to stay. During this time she gets to know the colonel and see all his different sides. Little does she know as she begins to develope deeper feelings for Cassius, he holds a dark secret in his heart.
As always Frantz's beautiful descriptons of the places and scenery pull you in and you feel like you are actually there. She does not dissappoint with her characters either. The main characters Roxie and Cass are wonderful. I love the beautiful message about faith and forgivness.
However, I feel there are some things that were not needed. Roxie's inner struggle after Cass tells her his dark secret seems to go on a bit too long and seems to draw away from other aspects of the story. I would have liked to see Roxie and Cass work together to solve a mystery that Roxie discovered. At some point it just felt thrown in and not important and at some point forgotten until it is thrown in again at the end. At times the story seemed a bit too dramatic and a lot seemed to be going on.
Also there are some things readers should know as this has a Christian label as these things may bother some. Drinking and prostitution are mentioned quite a bit albeit described in a tasetful way. Also there is murder, an attempted murder, a suicide, and an attempted suicide. Though it is a clean Christian romance the kissing scenes may be a bit much for some and are much more detailed compared to Frantz's other books I've read.
Laura Frantz is an amazing writer and I have enjoyed her other books I've read. This one, though I love the concept, was not my favorite book of hers. However, if you like dramatic stories and the things I mentioned do not concern you, you may really enjoy this.
