Unnervingly honest and open

Max gets five stars for his honesty alone. Not many people would be as open with being sexually abused like Max. He takes you on quite a journey as he tells of his incredible life. I enjoyed his story and think anybody would also.

A very good autobiography by a much overlooked figure

I read Max's book three years ago, then turned it over to my 16 year old son. Jake devoured it. Max is in some respects that fly on the wall, showing us a differrent view of baseball over the years and the people who played it; the ones we know and those we only thought we knew. It the same time, Max is a thread running through most of the lives of those who have 'come up through the system'. The book reflects his experiences well, from losing teeth to overenthusiastic assistants, to the dichotomy between the depression before performing and the manic while on the field, in his element. After you read "Ball Four' and 'Field of Dreams', read this one for a new look at another side of the game.
