Along with Bugles in the Afternoon, Ernest Haycox has written two of the finest novels ever written about the Army and the battles they fought against the Indians. This one concerns the great southwest territory and the wars with the Apaches. Its the story of two captains who have their own ideas of how to conduct this war, and who hate each other. Eleanor Warren finds herself in conflict with herself torn between these two men, and the battle they must eventually face with each other and with the Indians. Right from the openning pages Ernest Haycox makes you feel you are right there aboard the boat with Eleanor as she returns from a trip to the east. Mr. Haycox's vivid and completely historical descriptions of clothing and the surroundings are without exception some of the best ever put on paper. I can not stress strong enough how much I like this book.
