One of my all time favorite books.

The sadness, joy, love, heartbreaking longing... what a story for the ages.

One of the two favorite books that I enjoyed this year.

This book is fascinating, well-written, well-researched, and provides great insights in the life and times of that era. The spiritual aspects of the story ring true without being preachy and overwhelming. My other favorite book this year is The Invention of Wings, also by Sue Monk Kidd. That book, also carefully researched, is about Sarah and Angelina and their servant, real life Quaker abolitionists who fought and suffered for their beliefs. Their lifelong dedication and love are evident throughout their hardships and challenges. These unsung heroes deserve to be remembered. In The Book of Longings, the missing years of Jesus’ life and his work and travels, as well as his connections to biblical people and places, come alive and are real to the reader as described by the woman he loved. The longings of the main characters, as well as the deep sadness, is heartfelt and evident without being depressingly crushing. It is is uplifting, loving, and inspiring. Jesus is not the main character, but he is essential to the story. Anyone curious about the lives of people in those times will love this book.

God Given Imagination
