A good contribution to the series

The Opposing Viewpoints series is a good series for students and others who are working on some of the hot button issues of today. Each volume contains essays and articles that explore the issues thoroughly from several different angles. Sometimes there are two clear sides, but sometimes it is a bit more nuanced. This particular volume deals with the turbulent years of the 1960s in the United States. The issues explored within the volume include the Vietnam war, support and opposition, and general movements of political activism in that regard. Also explored is the topic of Civil Rights, both for African Americans and for women. The Civil Rights Movement and the Women's Liberation Movement are explored in pro and con style. Finally, the issues of the Great Society project and the general impact of the 1960s on overall American values is discussed. Overall, this is a very good beginners book to the issue. It helps to set the guidelines for debate and discussion. There is an appendix with facts about the 1960s in a chronological timeline, some excerpts from documents from that time, as well as suggestions for further reading. The author, Jennifer Hurley, teaches and writes, having received a master's degree from Boston University.
