A GOLDEN BOOK OF SURGERY

This is an excellent book ,both for students and surgeons and I think without this book study of surgery is absolutely incomplete.

Sabiston has raised the bar for surgery texts yet again.

Sabiston continues where he left off, expanding and inmproving the 14th edition, with many of the same contributors (eg. Orringer, Meyers, Rolandelli, Urbaniak) from past editions, and lots of new ones. I sometimes prefer the new ones, since they tend to review their topic from a more objective view (eg. MEN by Larimore) vs. the "I do it this way" approach (such as Orringer on transhiatal esophagectomy). The graphics are improved, and the basic science sections have been beefed up (no doubt a response to Greenfield) often with the addition of non-surgeon authors (Olga Jonassen on diabetes, for example). A gigantic plus for this book is the accompaniments, namely the pocket handbook, review test book, and essentials (in my view, the only surgery text 3rd year med students should be reading). But the coup de grace is the CD-ROM companion, which contains all the text and graphics from the book, and unlike Scientific American's _Care of the Surgical Patient_ is able to display them both at once. This is now the standard for the general surgeon's bookshelf... the only thing left to add is a web site.
