High Body Count

Nearly two years have passed between book four in the series and this so it was interesting to see if this series takes off or disappears again like has happened with others such as Wildgun and Fury that also had long gaps in their publishing history. I can't say with definite certainty but I think we have a new author writing under the name of Tom Calhoun. Little things such as J. T.'s choice of words and his horse having a name didn't ring true with my memories of the previous four books. But what of the book itself? J. T. Law, a bounty hunter, working in Texas comes to the help of an old friend, Sheriff McCracken. Kuykendall's gang is running riot in Howard County but getting evidence on the gang is almost impossible, no citizen has lived to testify against them. Now there's a new witness and McCracken wants J. T. to keep him alive until the judge arrives. That's about it, the book has a straight forward plot with little in the way of surprises or plot twists. It's written confidently and has a large body count, in fact the latter part of the book just moves from one gunfight to another rapidly. Women have very minor rolls in the story and I did feel that J. T. came across a little like a super-hero at times, such as when he takes on eight gunmen. In conclusion the book was an entertaining enough read - although I felt it would have been better a little shorter. Having said that I am looking forward to reading the next one.
