I first got this book when Jay Abraham recommended it to me. It was a revelation! I began to realize that there is a real difference in the outcome affected by words. That may seem obvious when you read it but it wasn't obvious, in a practical sense, to me at the time. It showed me actual phrases used by actual sales people and how a smart choice in words could mean a BIG difference in the outcome: whether you get a sale or not. Although Elmer Wheeler mostly applied this technique in retail sales situations, most current day direct response copywriters use this book to gain knowledge on how to craft words for direct marketing sales letters and web sites. This book embodies the current day direct marketer's mantra that the 3 most important things needed to get results from your sales letters and web sites is: Testing, Testing, Testing. Elmer Wheeler was the first to put that into practice in "live" situations. He owned the "Testing Institute" in New York City and they were hired by the top retail stores to discover what words produced the greatest sales. What is even more amazing is that these words were usually uttered by totally UNtrained store clerks, all the more testimony that they worked. All the clerk had to do was to change what they said when they greeted or replied to the customer and boom, sales increased. Because they did so much testing, they had the best documented results.
