Helpful Hints on a Handy Handbook for Hands-on Reform

... Teachers-Transforming Their World and Their Work is a follow-up volume to Ann Lieberman and Lynne Miller's earlier work, Teachers: Their World and Their Work. Believing teachers to be the center of meaningful change in schools, Lieberman and Miller present case studies and personal accounts of their work with educators that have effectively brought about school reform. The book benefits from Lieberman sharing her expertise of teacher leadership and development from her years at Teacher College, Columbia University and Miller sharing her knowledge of teacher development and reform from her work at University of Pennsylvania, University of Massachusetts, and Harvard University. The authors' collective experience adds credibility to their commentary and profiling of effective strategies and components of school reform. Although the book does not introduce new revelations to the body of knowledge related to school reform and leadership development, it does present the material in a concise and easy to read format. This book is not for deep intellectual pondering, rather it would be a good read for educators at a school who are interested in moving their institution forward. A wonderful dialogue could develop between new and veteran teachers as they discussed their insights from this book and what change might look like for their campus. Today, when so much is documented about all that is wrong with education, this book provides a glimmer of hope for our educational future. Whether you are a new teacher just setting out to change the world, or a seasoned teacher that just needs a puff of wind for your sails to continue the course, you will find this book an encouragement to you professionally. When you finish this book, you might consider passing it down the hall to someone else who needs a lift.Bradley S. Mason
