This step-by-step tutorial shows readers how to program with Visual Basic in a set amount of time. This description may be from another edition of this product.
Most books talking about database programming with Visual Basic give only cursory treatment to programming using the ODBC API. They rely, instead on using the "preferred" methods of ADO, RDO, and DAO. However, when your dealing with an ODBC driver that only supports level 1 functionality, you can run into trouble using those technologies (as I did). Then, you are left with no alternative but to code directly against the API. I have a stack of database programming books, and this is the only one to give any real coverage to using the API to read and write data from databases (how often do you actually need to query what functions the ODBC Driver supports anyway?). My thanks to the author.
I found it very helpful.

This is a very good book, much better than the usual example. I read it through before trying anything out on the computer, and was able to follow pretty much everything. When I went to the computer, I ran into the errors other reviewers have noted. But they were pretty obvious. And I don't think this book contains more than other computer manuals. Proofreading standards in general are awful throughout the printing trades [I'm a former typographer], and the usual poor organization and lack of clarity of writing in computer manuals compound the problem. But given all that, I got a lot out of the book. Most important, I haven't found anything else that covers this material that comes even close to it.

Best tutorial for VB programmers new to Database Programming

I can't help but notice that there is a wide divergence of views about this book. Personally, I found it well-written and well-planned. It is not for everybody. In particular, it is not for the experienced database programmer. It is not for a DP veteran. It IS for a competent Visual Basic Programmer (1 or 2 classes or similar experience) who wants to expand his/her abilities to include database programming. If you think that one book will contain all you need to know, well, GET REAL! What you will find is a gradual approach to the subject, with a very good example of several database applications (Actually 3) that will lead you to obtain a solid foundation on the subject. Database theory is covered so that you have a basic understanding. The Visual Basic way of accessing databases is well covered. There are good examples. From here, I would recommend getting more advanced books, depending on which direction you want to go. But this book is all you will need to get up to speed, write some basic to intermediate level programs, and learn the lingo.
Very good.

This book and "Teach yourself Visual Basic in 21 days" make it a perfect combination. Anybody serious about getting started and going intermediate with VB need to get these two books. I highly recommend them. The use of summaries, quizes, and projects make this book an excellent tool for any beginner VB'er. Take it from me, this is how I got started and still use the books
