Girls who can

It was not until after reading these stories to my daughter, that I realized that the fairy tales my generation of women had grown up usually had heroines who needed to be rescued. The heroines in Tatterhood solve problems, rescue themselves and sometimes their princes. Hopefully girls will identify with these competent and confident heroines. I don't know many women who can afford to sit around in an ivory tower waiting for a prince to rescue them. These are wonderful, amusing tales from another and equally valid perspective.

Great for girls

This book is awesome, esp. for girls. It features folk tales in which the protagonists are all smart, strong, clever, just girls or women. We read it to my daughter at 4, and at 9, she still goes back and rereads the stories.

An excellent collection to read to both girls and boys!

What a delightful range of stories. Nothing overly pointed or didatic here. Just good interesting stories that hold any child's attention. I found these stories particularly good to share with my son and nephews who are often engaged in fantasy stories full of male heroics. These stories have just as much heroics, but here the heroes are girls and women. Give a copy to every parent you know!

a great book

A wonderful book. My 9 year old daughter grabbed it and read ahead in it every night after I'd read a few stories to her and her sister. I'm going to buy a copy for my mother-in-law (a confirmed feminist) and for my daughters' school library. Has all the proper self-affirming, brave-girls-do-things values, and (certainly as if not more important) very good stories, too.

An excellent storybook for girls of all ages

This is a wonderful book, very female affirming. The heroines do not languish in a tower waiting for the handsome prince to save them, but instead take the leading roles in adventures, take action, solve problems, and win with wit and cleverness. My daughters and I LOVE this book! If you have daughters, nieces, grandaughters, little sisters, this is a wonderful book to read together.
