If Someone Swaps a Book of Yours For This, You'll Be Telling Them, No Switchbacks!

This is a sensational novel that half way through does a complete 180 in the storyline with an even more interesting story taking over from one that was already very interesting and good. Matthew Klein, best known for his later masterpiece Con Ed (also released under the title Conned) wasn't far off the masterpiece level with his debut novel Switchback either. Look I'm not even going to mention what happens half way through the book and I hope no other reviewers spoil it for potential readers either, but lets just say it's surprising, it's unique, it's brilliant, it will question ever moral inside of you, you'll be asking yourself would you do the same thing? If you really want to know ask me a question in the comments section and I will tell you there but I do not believe in giving away plot spoilers in reviews. The basic plot (well it's not really but I'm not giving away the halfway surprise plot development) is Timothy Van Bender, a rich ageing financial investor has been running a very successful business venture for a very long time and has a hot new 24 year old secretary who seems to worship him. He has some of America's richest men's money invested in his company. Bender has never really known what he is doing but he always shows extreme confidence, and the exact words to say for any situation immediately enter his mind. So when all his clients' money is invested in the Yen and the Yen starts to go up in value his clients' worth drops $24 million. Bender decides to let it ride and invests the rest of his clients' money in the Yen so at the end of the month his investors won't realise a thing (unless he tells them when he announces the record profits from his bold move). As the days go by the Yen starts to improve, Bender's marriage seems to have been completely refreshed for the better and everything seems like it is going to work out for not only the best but to make Bender's life sheer bliss. That is until the morning he receives a phone call from his wife, telling him she has cancer and goodbye as he listens to her about to commit suicide. However the police and others don't believe it was suicide, the Yen situation worsens and it looks like Bender's easy life is all but over. Then a huge development comes into the plot which I am not going to give away but lets just say, you won't regret picking up this sensational book!
