Let one of the world's greatest swimming coaches teach you how to perfect your competitive strokes In "Swimming Fastest"--a revised and updated version of one of the best books ever written on competitive swimming--author Ernest Maglischo reveals the science behind the training principles that led his teams to 13 NCAA national championships at the Division II level and 19 conference championships. This book is the definitive reference on stroke technique and training methods for swimming. It shows you how to apply scientific information to the training process so that you can swim stronger and faster. "Swimming Fastest" addresses not only the how but also the why of training. It's the one source that you can turn to for reliable information about hydrodynamics and exercise physiology, giving you all the information you need to evaluate present and future concepts of training and stroke mechanics."Swimming Fastest" covers every aspect of competitive swimming. The book is heavily illustrated, with more than 500 illustrations and photos featuring world-class swimmers. Sequences of photos taken from the front, side, and underneath views show you exactly how to perform competitive strokes, starts, and turns. This book is a source that coaches and athletes will pull down from their shelves again and again for reference. In part I Maglischo masterfully explains the mechanics of competitive swimming. He presents detailed technique analysis of the four primary strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. He also explores the roles of stroke rate, stroke length, and drag reduction and reevaluates the role of lift forces and the Bernoulli principle in swimming propulsion. He explains the complex relationship between stroke length and stroke rate and swimming speed, and he reviews recent findings on the physical basis of swimming propulsion and the techniques that swimmers use to apply propulsive force. Part II explains the physiology behind the most effective training methods and provides detailed sample workouts and training programs for each event. Maglischo provides critical information to help you train more accurately and monitor your training more effectively. He evaluates current training theory, explaining why the anaerobic threshold theory of training needs revision and why muscle fiber types are important to swim training. Maglischo also presents important new studies that define the relationship between endurance and sprint training, and he suggests their implications for training. Part III addresses topics that pertain specifically to competition and racing. Maglischo shares his insights and recommendations for pre-race tapering, establishing race pace, racing strategies, and post-race routine.Every swimming coach and serious swimmer will benefit from this book. "Swimming Fastest" will be the first resource you turn to when you want to trim precious seconds off your best times.
This is the best swimming book I have ever read. Everything a swimmer or coach needs: training principles, swimming technique, and mental aspects of the sport. It covers everything even how you should split your race. Lots of drills for every stroke.
an excellent race-training reference

I'm primarily a rower, so I can't speak about the swimming-specific sections of this book. But I can rave about the more generally applicable sections. I've used this book for several years to design training programs for various rowing events, from 500 meters (about 1.5-2 minutes) to 2,000 meters (about 7-8 minutes) to head races (20 minutes and longer). Maglischo's explanations of how to balance the levels of effort in a training program for sprint or endurance events is tremendously helpful, as are the explanations of how to periodize training programs and create daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly programs. The only tiny criticism I have of this book is that I would find it slightly more useful if the swimming distances included approximate times for the events. That way, it would make transferring the principles to comparable events in different sports more straightforward. I recommend this book to any coach or athlete of any racing sport. You'll find not only physiological issues addressed, but also issues concerning pacing and race strategy -- a must for anyone desiring an internal focus during racing.
great for swimmer parents too

i am a dad with a freshman son on the high school varsity swim team...this book is superb not only for the swimmer but also for parent(s) who are looking for more insight into how to help prepare their son/daughter for the complicated sport of swimming...i agree with other reviewers in that it can be technical...especially for a freshman but it is very readable by a motivated, non-swimming parent
The best swimming book in the world since 1993.

There are approximately 10 "swimming nations'. US along with Japan, Hungary, Australia, UK and Sweden is one of these nations that have a rich swimming tradition and continuous participation in Olympic swimming events since the 1896 Olympics. Professor Maglischo comes out of this rich US tradition. This book is without any doubt the best ever written on the sport. For all of us that read and collect swimming books it is not strange that Prof. Maglischo wrote this magnificent book. The first edition of Swimming Even Faster (Swimming Faster 1982) was a best seller for almost 11 years and it was the best swimming book ever written before this edition appeared. I hope that prof. Maglischo will prepare for us the next edition of this one.

I am a multi-sport athlete trying to get into swimming. I borrowed this book from a friend to help me with my swimming (and once I had it, I had to buy a copy for myself!!!), as I am truly a beginner. This book nails down, in great detail, technique for efficient swimming. It gets technical at times, but I believe this book is a must have for swimmers (or swimming coaches) of all levels. Great book!!! Very thorough!!!
