Seduced, abandoned, and left pregnant and unwed, Rebecca finds a new life with Jake, a ranchhand who marries her at the request of her father. Original. This description may be from another edition of this product.
From the onset, the author's words will seize your heart. A moving little book. A page turner. Throughout the book, the reader is on edge as uneasiness prowls. Still, Lorraine Heath continues to seduce her reader, drawing upon her excellent writing style, and applying subtle humor throughout the pages.Within the book, we discover one of the most wonderful heros ever to grace a romance novel. Jake Burnett, a product of a wretched childhood, has grown to be a gentle, tender man -- yet, a man who can gain another man's total respect. He has been Rebecca Anderson's dependable friend and now she has become his reluctant wife. Hesitant? Why? Rebecca loves another man.The reader becomes completely involved in the growing relationship of a husband and wife. The uneasiness that flutters, throughout the book, suddenly slams into the reader. Oh, Rebecca girl say it ain't so. Don't go! This reader could not believe the road Lorraine Heath elected to travel. I literally sobbed . . ."She left me as soon as his foot crossed the threshold of our house. The only hope of holding onto anything we had is to let her go. Otherwise, bitterness and regret will kill everything. She'll always wonder what it would have been like if she had gone with him. She loves him, and now he's come for her . . ."This writer has drawn a poignant and gripping work of art. Thank you, Lorraine Heath, for taking the time to master your craft.Grace Atkinson, Ontario - Canada.
I don't normally cry when I read but get your tissues out

This sat on my shelf for over a year before I picked it up and thought what the heck I'll read this. The cover was not appealing to me but I really love all of Lorraine Heath books so I figured I needed to read this one. OH! MY! GOSH! I was balling, not just a little teary eyed but all out crying. I would like to know where there is such a man as Jake. To have suffered as much as he did and to love as much as he could love. Rebecca was so unworthy of him. To have his love but to still be in love with the father of her baby you just wanted to reach in the book and shake her and say are you stupid or something. This book starts out with Rebecca pregnant from a man she met on her fathers ranch. This man left her without knowing she was pregnant. She had the image of her first love and clung to this. Jake works on the ranch and Rebecca's father ask Jake to marry her. Jake has loved Rebecca since he started working there. Jake marries her and they move to Texas. This is where the stroy really begins and the depth of Jakes love and the heartached he has been through is revealed. There are other twist and turns that they go through but this is a fast paced page turner that will make you fall in love with Jake over and over again.
Unique romance

This is definitely an unique romance story I've read after reading hundreds of romance books (literally!) In that, instead of the usual act of selfless love and dedication mostly done by women characters, it is the man who displays these emotions and actions. An average guy who falls in love with a beautiful woman who doesn't notice until after their marriage of a few months. He loves her unconditionally even though she was pregnant with another man's seed and in love with the man who deserted her, the opposite of Jake, handsome and self-absorbed. It was heart-warming to see how Jake's character was displayed throughout the book. You can feel his pain when he goes through pain and letting go of his love. I admire Jake for his unconditional love towards Rebecca even though she doesn't return those emotions back til later when she chooses her life to be with her love who deserted her. I think the book would have been better if Rebecca had more of a stronger character. She doesn't really give a reason to her love for Brett except perhaps the physical attraction. She doesn't fight for her marriage to work, and leaves so that she could be with Brett. If she had a stronger character, she would have realized from the start that Brett wasn't the man for her, especially when she catches a naked woman in his bed! But she ignores that incident, and accept's his infidilities. She then realizes her love for Jake, and comes back. Jake was appreciated more in the story and others see his unique strong character to admire and want, how could Rebecca turn him down for someone who she felt physically attracted to? I am pleased with Lorraine Heath's writing, she's a great writer! My favorite and I would highly recommend is Texas Splendor, an awesome heart-felting romance.
A sweet and fulfilling story

I have read a number of Lorraine Heath's books but this was a bit of a change. It is a very sweet, moving and inspiring story of a man whose love knows no limits, a woman who is learning to find herself and an extraordinary marriage which, ultimately, brings poignant happiness and completion to a man and a woman who truly deserve it.Rebecca is pregnant by another man (a juvenile, hormone inspired first lust who is not what she thought) and is married to Jake, a man who has overcome a past of pain, humiliation and rejection. However, he has a bottomless heart and a love for Rebecca which allows him to let her walk away. Ultimately, however (this is a romance after all!) she returns giving him (and therefore herself) such happiness that you just know these two will continue on in one of those very special marriages which brings completion to both partners and the children they produce. This is a keeper to be reread from time to time for the pleasure of watching these two people find their happiness and love.
My favorite book...

This is the first (and only) book I have ever read that as soon as I finished it, I turned back to page one and read the entire book again. I have now read Sweet Lullaby perhaps six or seven times and I love it as much every time I read it. I fell in love with Jake and I wished I could have Rebecca as my best friend! This book is definitely a keeper! Since I wrote the initial review of this book back in 1998, I have read it several more times and my opinion of this book has not changed. In fact, I bought a second copy of the book so I would have a backup in case something happens to my other copy or in case I wear it out by reading it so much! Buying a second copy is definitely a first for me!
