Mentoring Student Teachers

This book is a clearly written book for cooperating teachers who want to know how to mentor student teachers. Most teachers know what they know unconsciously. Modeling "best practice" techniques for a novice teacher requires articulating the reasons why teachers do what they do. This book helps provide language for cooperating teachers to break down the complex act of teaching to student teachers. This book is a great confidence booster for both student teachers and cooperating teachers. Chapters are organized around useful skill sets of information, such as "Working with college supervisor," "Establishing effective personal relationships in student teaching," Supervisory conferences" and "Evaluation." Also, The fourteen checklists, guidelines and models for teacher analysis in the Appendix are worth the price of the book. As a university professor I use this book in my supervision classes. Students usually comment about the books practicality and accesibility. Every school would profit from having a copy. Who knows? Even principals might find it helpful when conducting personnel evaluations on the teachers in their building.
