Although the basic structure and organization of the ninth edition of this text remain intact, no chapter is entirely unchanged in the present edition. While most of the changes to the first eight chapters are stylistic, a number of photos, figures, and tables have been added, dropped, or substantively changed throughout the text, and virtually all the data and long-term comparisons in the Chapters on industrial and indiustrializing societies (Chapters 9-16) have been updated or modified. Also, because of changes in formatting and organization, which helped to reduce the cost of this paperback edition to your students, the text is significantly shorter - it is now 429 pages, whereas the eighth edition was 479. These changes have altered the placement of figures, tables, and photos familiar to long-time users.
