Studies in Genesis

Robert S. Candlish (1806-1873), was a Scottish pastor who became one of the leading figures in establishing the Free Church of Scotland in 1843. Later becoming the distinguished principal of New College, Edinburgh in 1862 until his death. Cyril Barber states in the Minister's Library: "Expository messages rich in their devotional emphasis, containing helpful thelogical discussions. Thoroughly conservative and of special value to the pastor." Charles Spurgeon in Commenting and Commentaries writes: "We venture to characterize this as THE work upon Genesis, it should be in every biblical library." There is not much more which I can add to their comments except that Candlish really excells in the biographical sections of Genesis concerning the lives of the Patriarchs especially in the lives of Jacob and Joseph. Here Candlish reminds me of his predecessors the Puritans who were known as "physicians of the soul". It is a shame that this particular edition is out of print. Sovereign Grace Publishers has an edition in print but it is only 500 pages long. I do not know whether it is abridged or two columns per page. I would recommend this commentary to any pastor who wants to draw deep spiritual truths from Genesis for his flock and also to any lay person who will take the time to read through it.
