If you have to purchase Garrett & Grisham and problem sets are assigned, it's really to your benefit to purchase the study guide and solutions manual. It's surprisingly comprehensive and the problems are worked out in great detail. The textbook tends to gloss over (or ignore entirely) certain aspects of solving some problems and the companion fills in the gaps. Ideally, you're taking biochemistry with a competent instructor and only have to use G & G as a reference, but I'm forced to use it as a primary tool for learning. I ended up not really needing this book for biochemistry class, and my instructor helps write the national exam so i'm in a good class that covers the necessary material comprehensively. Know your organic chemistry-get a good study guide, and have a good gen chem book to refer to-sometimes biochem aims a bit over your head and reviewing the basics can fill in the gaps. I recommend Lippincott's Biochemistry Review as an excellent companion to any biochem textbook.
